Hi Bruce,

I am using both URL Master and Tagger module on my site. I want use 2 or maybe 3 word phrase but on url it replaces empty space with %20. Is there any way to replace %20 with a dash to make it more SEO friendly URL.

Thanks

The Tagger module doesn't insert dashes, because this would change the meaning of the tag (ie "two-words" is different to "two words").

In the Url Master module, there is a setting at the top of the 'Friendly Url Settings' page.  This is the choice of space encoding-  you can change this to use the '+', so you will get a tag Url of two+words instead of two%20words.   While generally it won't make much difference for SEO (search engines recognise both %20 and + as valid spaces/word separators, it does look a whole lot better.

Just a note though, if you're on IIS7, you may run afoul of the security settings using '+' in the Url path.  I've got a blog post on this one, there are some settings you can change.

I was hoping that the empty space will be treated same like it does on a page name it replaces with - or _. Do you have any plans to change this in next version? I think dash will make lot of difference in Saerch Engines because of the user behavior. If they see bunch of %20 in a search results page vs dash a typical user will most likely click on the one with dashes. I am using 116 now but will move to IIS 7 this month so I do not want to mess with + at this time.

Thanks for the quick response.

The problem with using hyphens to separate tags is that, once you do that, you can't have hyphenated tags.  For example, 'know all' and 'know-all' have a slightly different meaning, but by forcing a hyphen separator, you can't have both.  Whilst this may not be a problem for most people, that's why the design is the way it is.

I'll take a look at an option to hyphen-separate the tags, but it may prove unworkable in terms of backwards compatibility.

I am sure a talented programmer like you can make this work. If you keep it as an option for user to select whether to repleces space with dashes or not will be good. Also I think you can also verify if empty space use dash if a dash is already there then do not add any extra dash. If not then let user can choose and option with an warning message for users using - in their tag. I love your modules and tagger is awesome and adding dashes to empty space will make it perfect. Thanks and keep up the good work.
