Hi Bruce,

I just want to clarify what is legitimate use of the Friendly URL Provider. The background is - I develop websites for clients and would like to use the FUP rather than the DNN provider. I can also forsee wanting to tweak the source code a little, add extra features etc.

On the Download page it says "There's no registration, no licensing, just a very useful free tool for all the DotNetNuke community to use.". However each source code file contains a legal notice that says:

// Copyright iFinity.com.au
// This is customised software developed entirely by iFinity. The below copyright messages should be followed
// and any copies of this software should include this message.
// Usage rights and restrictions:
// You may use this software without restriction on the number of installations in private and commercial applications
// You may make modifications to the source code of this software for your own requirements.
// You may not resell copies of this software or software derived from this source code as a licensed product.

Can you clarify which of the following are OK?

  • Include the FUP binaries in a site I develop for a client
  • Use the source code as a base for "my own" provider, i.e. add new features, make a few changes, and then use this modified provider for future client projects

Please note: I am never going to package the provider for sale to the public. I just want to know if I can use and modify it for client projects. The client by the way never gets the source code; I just create the site, set up the hosting, and provide support. I don't have any formal licensing agreements with the clients at this point.

Thanks

Laurence - your two uses are OK. You can make modifications to the source code and use it on your client projects, as long as you keep the original licensing messages in the source code.

The 'resell copies' section is to restrict people from packaging up the software and selling it as a standalone product - ie, listing on snowcovered.
