Hi Bruce,

I have a few questions about my old sitemap.axp file.  Before switching to your GoogleSiteMap I was using the default sitemap.axp.  Under Admin - Site Settings I entered this site map and submitted it to Google.  After switching to GoogleSiteMap my Google Webmaster Tools showed two verified sitemaps - yours and this old one.  I wanted to get rid of the old one (because it ignored all of my Ventrian NA pages), so I selected it and deleted it within Webmaster tools.  I also deleted the actual .axp file off of my webserver.

The problem is that the old sitemap.axp will not go away.  Under webmaster tools if you display "all sitemaps", it is displayed with a big red X in front of it (with 4 out of 29 URLs indexed).  When logged in as the host and looking at Admin - SIte Settings the google sitemap still shows the old axp file.  I tried changing this entry to your file, but the field is locked.  I cannot edit the sitemap text or delete it. A few weeks ago I changed the names of some of my web pages.  The old sitemap has these old names and could be generating 404 errors.

1. Wouldn't it be better if my site settings pointed to GoogleSiteMap.axd and not the old sitemap?  If yes, how do I do this?  Is the field locked because I deleted the .axp file?

2. How can I get rid of all traces of the old map?

Thanks,

Chip

First, check your robots.txt file.  If you have the sitemap.aspx listed there, it will show up in the webmaster console.  You can try removing it from the webmaster console, but the main thing is to remove it from the robots.txt file on your server.  (and put in googlesitemap.axd in its place)

You can't really remove the sitemap from your site because it is part of DNN.  But if you replace it in the robots.txt file, then it should all follow through.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the tip.  The robots file already has the correct sitemap listed (you must have corrected that when I hired you to implement the GoogleSiteMap).

In the interim I contacted my hosting provider.  They say they are able to log in and edit the sitemap entry under Admin-Site Settings.  I just sent them a link and will see if they are successful.  I will let you know what happens.

I am hoping that deleting the old sitemap from Site Settings will cause Google to completely ignore the old map and rely 100% on your map.

I don't think removing it from the site settings will affect things much, but there's no harm in doing that, so you might as well.  Sometimes these changes take a little time to flow through to the webmaster console, so I'd just keep checking and see if there is a change.
