The approach you have of creating the friendly Url and then deconstructing that in the siteurls.config file may work just fine.

However, as you know, you have to manually enter a rewrite rule for each different product.

The Url Master module cannot rewrite to module-specific rules, as there is no interface between the various modules and the Urls. There's no way for the Url Master module to know that 'productname1' means xmmid/1478 etc. So the rules have to be defined somewhere else.

The Urls will work OK - as in they won't break anything- but for module specific rewrites you need module specific rules somewhere.
